Testing times for these embattled learners

Learner drivers struggling to pass their test may take solace from the tale of one poor South East London lady.

The unidentified 28-year-old has, according to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), failed her theory test no less than 110 times.

Given that the test costs £31, the woman has invested a significant chunk of cash on only one half of the British testing process.

Already £3,410 out of pocket, she still must face what most people believe is the much tougher practical test.

The plight of Miss X from London was highlighted following a Freedom of Information Request to the DSA.

The report also highlighted the case of a number of other prolifically slow learner drivers. These included a 30-year-old man from Peterborough who failed his theory test 86 times. Meanwhile, a forty-something from Birmingham passed his theory at the 80th attempt.

But for most learners, the practical test is infinitely more nerve-wracking than the theory. So spare a thought for the 40-year-old man from Stoke-On-Trent who took it a record 37 times before passing.

A DSA spokesman said in a press statement: “It is essential that all drivers demonstrate they have the right skills, knowledge and attitude to drive safely.

“The driver testing and training regime tests candidates’ ability to drive safely and responsibly as well as making sure they know the theory behind safe driving.
