Survey Reveals UK Drivers Have A Real Need For Speed

As the country tuned in to watch their Formula One favourites take part in the Silverstone Grand Prix over the weekend, a new survey has emerged that shows that British motorists themselves have a real need for speed.

Carried out by INRIX, the survey reveals that three quarters of UK drivers confess to regularly exceeding 80 mph and a third admit to breaking the 100mph barrier.

It is reported that, surprisingly, middle-aged motorists were found to be the biggest offenders – almost half of those surveyed between the ages of 35 and 45 have reached 100mph. A fifth of middle-aged motorists also admitted to making a habit of driving 10mph above the speed limit.

The RAC explains that the majority of speedsters were male, with 84% confessing in the survey, compared to less than 70% of female drivers. Less than a third of speeding drivers surveyed were aged between 20 and 34 years.

As a nation of self-confessed speed demons, it’s worth reiterating the dangers associated with excessive speeding. Of course there is a physical risk to driver and passengers alike, as well as a risk to fellow motorists who may be affected by inconsiderate or aggressive driving.

There are legal implications associated with speeding too – a fixed penalty fine is £60, however if the case is referred to court, the maximum fine to pay is £1,000. When it comes to motorway offences, you can expect to part with up to £2,500.

Normally, a speeding conviction can carry with it a stint at a speed awareness course for first time offenders, however 3 to 6 penalty points can be served up to. Repeat offenders will find themselves banned from driving should they exceed 12 points within 3 years, however it’s worth noting that in particular circumstances, law enforcement has the ability to issue an instant ban.
