On-The-Spot Penalty Rise
It has been announced today that British motorists caught driving in an inconsiderate manner could face on-the-spot, police-issued penalties.
The move is aimed to tackle problem drivers who tailgate or hog lanes and gives officers the power to issue £100 fines and three points. The AA warned that a third of drivers risked facing a fine under the move.
Whilst serious motoring offences will still be processed through the courts, fixed penalties for misdemeanours - such as not wearing a seat belt while driving - have also risen from £60 to £100.
As has been the case previously, motorists subject to the new penalties can either opt for the £100 fine or a driving course.
It is understood that previously many minor offences remained unpunished due to the bureaucracy involved in taking a case to court.
Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond is quoted as saying: "I think it's the right level to choose, and I'm convinced that it will be a deterrent for a number of people".
