October is Tyre Safety Month!
October is Tyre Safety Month, supported by tyre safety organisation, Tyre Safe. Throughout the month, we’ll be blogging tyre safety tips to ensure that you stay safe on the roads.
But first of all, why is tyre safety important? According to recent research carried out by Tyre Safe, one in five motorists have never checked their tyres, and up to a quarter of drivers aren’t replacing their tyres until their already illegal. This could mean that there are up to 10 million vehicles on the roads which have tyres that are either illegal or dangerous, this year alone.
These statistics are shocking, when you consider the consequences. Under-inflated tyres can affect handling and grip, which may affect the behaviour of your vehicle. When underinflated, your tyres are also more likely to suffer from high-speed deflation on dual carriage ways and motorways. If your tread depth is below the legal limit, your vehicle will take longer to stop when breaking and have less grip on the road. You’re also more likely to aquaplane when your tyres have insufficient grip.
If safety isn’t enough to entice you into checking your tyres, consider this – a correctly inflated tyre is more economical, for two reasons. Firstly, you’ll use less fuel, and secondly, tyres that are properly looked after require less frequent replacement.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be posting regular articles, offering you advice on looking after your tyres – stay tuned for updates. We’ll also be running be running a tyre safety competition – follow us on Twitter @WinnSolicitors for updates.
