Motorists warned over Scottish drink drive limit

Motorists who regularly drive into Scotland are receiving a fresh warning about drink driving, as the acceptable limit has been lowered north of the border.

The revised measures approved by the Scottish Parliament last month have been put in place in a bid to curb road traffic accidents, and have seen the legal limit of alcohol permitted dropped from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood.

The move has already proved popular, with almost 80% of Scottish motorists voicing their support in an RAC survey. It is hoped that the lower limit will drastically reduce road accident injuries that occur due to alcohol-fueled crashes, saving lives by making the roads safer.

An advertising campaign has been rolled-out by the Scottish government in a bid to raise awareness, with electronic signage being erected to warn motorists passing through the border towns.

Despite support for the new limits however, the same survey has showed that 92% of people asked showed concern over the differing limits across the UK, believing that separate limits for England and Scotland could lead to unnecessary confusion amongst those who regularly spread their time across both countries.

The survey also showed that 38% of UK motorists outside of Scotland would back a reduced alcohol limit being implemented throughout the rest of the country.
