JLR develops self-learning car

British-based manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover is developing a self-learning vehicle that can help drivers avoid accidents.

The car, which includes elements of artificial intelligence, will provide digital services to the driver via a ‘learning algorithm’ that recognises who is behind the wheel.

It also learns the quirks and trends of their driving style and, through innovative software, responds to this information.

Using a number of variables, such the time, road conditions and traffic volume, it will predict the behaviour of the driver and take control of the daily driving ‘chores’, allowing the driver to concentrate on the road ahead.

Wolfgang Epple, director of research and technology for Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The aim of our self-learning technology is to minimise driver distraction, which will help reduce the risk of accidents.

“Up until now most self-learning car research has only focused on traffic or navigation prediction. We want to take this a significant step further and our new learning algorithm means information learnt about you will deliver a completely personalised driving experience and enhance driving pleasure.”

The car will distinguish drivers by the smartphone or other device in their pocket. Once they’ve opened the car door, the mirrors, steering wheel and seat settings will all be set to the individual’s preferences.

Desired temperatures will also be set in the cabin, while the car’s ‘Smart Assistant’ will review the driver’s schedule for the day and set the navigation depending on traffic conditions to avoid congestion.
