Tips for Driving More Efficiently

Many people consider themselves to be good drivers. However, how efficient is your driving? Did you know, that by paying attention to your driving habits and modifying them slightly, you could save hundreds of pounds a year in fuel? Efficient driving can also help you to reduce your impact on the environment. Here are some top tips to help you become more efficient behind the wheel:

Change gear

Try moving up a gear when you reach between 2,000 and 2,500 revs. Adjusting your gears can make a real impact on how much fuel you use – you might save as much as 15 per cent!

Clear your car out

Carrying unnecessary weight can cause your car to use more fuel. Give your car a good clear out and make sure you’re not carrying any extra weight. Even a full tank of petrol could contribute to the weight of your vehicle and the amount of fuel you use – you might wish to consider putting less fuel in and topping up on a more regular basis.

Don’t stick to neutral

It is a common misconception that travelling in neutral will save fuel. However, cars today are more likely to consume more fuel in neutral than they are in the appropriate gear for the speed.

Tyre pressure

Ensure that your tyres are inflated to their optimal pressure. Tyres that are under-inflated can lead to an increase in the amount of fuel used, and can also be dangerous.

Plan your journey

If you have the option, ensure that you travel at times of day when the roads are quiet. Traffic leads to frequent breaking and accelerating, which uses much more fuel than continual driving. If you are stuck in traffic for a prolonged period, you may wish to consider turning your engine off to save fuel.
