Will my Car Insurance Drop when I Turn 21?

At 21, insurer statistics suggest that you are less likely to be in a car accident when driving than a person younger than you, so you may end up paying less than you have in previous years.

However, car insurance is still expensive for all young people, so here are some suggestions to ensure that you find a good deal.

• Consider increasing your car’s security features. Cars with immobilisers and alarms can be likely to attract less attention from thieves, so good security can have a positive effect on the price of your policy.

• Opt for telematics insurance. Telematics or ‘black box’ insurance record the way you are driving. Low miles, and safe driving are rewarded with lower premiums.

• Pick a car that’s cheap to insure. There are lots of factors which can affect how much it costs to insure a vehicle, from vehicle type to the time taken to obtain spare parts.

• Pay a higher excess. If you’re prepared to pay a bigger excess if you have an accident, your monthly premium payments are likely to be lower.

• Shop around. Prices for young drivers vary drastically from one insurer to another.
